Burned out on UVa hoops? - 04/17/2008
4/17/2008 7:44:27 AM
Two years of being a crowd favorite during garbage time may be all that Andy Burns can stomach. On Wednesday, the Virginia walk-on told The Daily Progress that he is considering quitting the team so that he can save his remaining years of eligibility to use after he graduates from UVa. Burns, an excellent student, said his plan would be to go to medical school - perhaps in the Ivy League - where he would have a chance to play.
“I’m just taking some time off,” Burns said. “I’m not sure what I’m going to do.
“I just haven’t had that moment yet where I think I can give it up.”
Burns had scholarship offers from American and Vermont coming out of Bishop Ireton High School in Alexandria, but decided to walk on at Virginia instead.

Iowa's Peterson getting on top of his game - 01/29/2008
1/29/2008 10:47:37 AM
Jeff Peterson has found that the final buzzer of each game presents him with another starting point, just one more opportunity for a freshman to learn.
“You hear everybody talk about how the speed of the game is different at this level, and until you experience it you really don’t understand it because it is,’’ Peterson said, labeling that as the biggest
transition he has had to make since joining the Hawkeyes after playing for one of the nation’s top high school programs at DeMatha Catholic in Hyattsville, Md.
“Things happen so quickly here. The decisions have to be made that much quicker, and being able to adjust to that is helping me compete.’’

Freshman center Jacob Green to leave WVU - 01/22/2008
1/22/2008 9:59:14 AM
MORGANTOWN – Redshirt freshman center Jacob Green has left the West Virginia men's basketball team, and Coach Bob Huggins confirmed at Saturday's practice Green will transfer.
"Jake's a great kid, but I think what Jake saw was he's not going to get a lot of playing time," Huggins said.
Green wasn't at practice as the Mountaineers (10-3, 0-1 Big East) prepare to play No. 10 Marquette (11-1, 1-0) in Sunday's 2 p.m. game at the Coliseum.
Huggins wouldn't say where Green was transferring because it isn't finalized, but it appears the 6-foot-9, 220-pound forward is headed to Fordham.
The Rams play in the Atlantic 10 and are coached by Dereck Whittenburg.
Whittenburg played high school basketball at DeMatha in the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference, the same league in which Green, who is from Clinton, Md., played at Gonzaga.
Despite his size and WVU's lack of depth in the post, Green was playing only 7.5 minutes per game and averaging 0.8 points and 2.0 rebounds. He played 10 of the 13 games but had not played in the past two.

"Thirty-eight minutes - that's a long time, what was the coach thinking on that? Obviously, you look at him, and he had nine assists and zero turnovers; he understands what's to be accomplished. He can focus on the task at hand, and at the end of the game, those add up to be success. He has a good perspective."

“Jeff has done a great job,” Iowa coach Todd Lickliter told the Des Moines Register. “I’m thankful that he’s come in here with the right approach, and he’s really done a great job of picking things up. Because of his attentiveness, he’s made gains faster than somebody that doesn’t care as much.”
In an exhibition game last week, Peterson only scored two points in a 56-30 victory but he grabbed six rebounds and only turned the ball over twice.

In Stewart’s only year as DeMatha’s starting quarterback, he completed 72 of 124 passes for 1,348 yards and 17 touchdowns. He was named First-Team Quarterback for the WCAC by DCSportsFan.com and honorable mention All-Met by The Washington Post.

Haynos is Still My Homeboy - 10/30/2007
10/30/2007 3:46:05 PM
After catching nearly 40 passes last season, Maryland senior tight end and former Gonzaga standout Joey Haynos has been used primarily as a blocker this season. Haynos has only caught 13 passes for 130 yards and no touchdowns. However, even with Maryland opting to use Haynos primarily as a blocker, he is still rated as one of the league’s top tight ends and a “bona fide NFL prospect.” Yahoo Sports had the following to say about Haynos:
"Joey Haynos, Maryland – A former walk-on who has turned himself into a bona fide NFL prospect thanks to his size, improved receiving skills and ability to get off the line and into his blocks. Haynos is a self-made player who provides a huge target at over 6-foot-7, 260 pounds. Scouts like that he is a hard worker who has steadily improved over each of the past two years. He should continue to get stronger, but his overall upside potential is average at best."

“Clearly, Tanard Jackson is on the rise, he's going to be a really good pro.”
Jackson has made a name for himself lately, recording his first NFL interception playing against Peyton Manning and the Colts. He also made a devastating hit on tight end Dallas Clark.
“We probably watched his hit on youtube 12 to 15 times,” said Mike DelGrande, the athletic director at the Bullis School in Potomac, Md., in an interview with www.news-press.com. “It's exciting for our kids to know that somebody from here is playing at the level he's playing at. We're all just proud of his accomplishments.”
Cajou, Sumner Expected to Contribute - 10/24/2007
10/24/2007 9:10:44 PM
Former Paul VI standouts Jean Cajou and Danny Sumner are expected to play important roles this season. Cajou, a redshirt freshman at Mount St. Mary’s, will see time both at the point and the shooting guard positions. Milan Brown, Mount St. Mary’s coach, had this to say about Jean Cajou.
“Jean will definitely have an adjustment this season; however, from day one, he will be our best defender. He brings speed and athleticism to both the wing and the point guard spot. He has a chance to be a big contributor for us because he can guard players at the point, off-guard, and wing positions.”
As a freshman last season for William & Mary, Sumner played in 21 games, averaging 2.2 points and 1 rebound in just over seven minutes of action per game. The team’s Web site had the following to say about Sumner:
“During his rookie campaign, Sumner struggled to learn the Tribe system in the early going, but came on toward the end of the season and finished with 21 appearances for the College. Over the final weeks of the season, Sumner came off the Tribe bench and provided solid minutes on the road at VCU, Fairfield and Drexel. The 6-7 wing scored seven points at VCU, while chipping in five points and a career-high three assists at Drexel. Sumner showed he has the talent to succeed on the collegiate level in just his second game with the Tribe. In the College’s 77-53 home-opening win over Wagner, the Fairfax, Va., native turned in a career-high 12 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the floor. He connected on a pair of 3-point field goals in 16 minutes of action.

Trimble’s 159 career receptions surpassed Army great Clennie Brundidge’s old record of 147.
"Coming into this year I knew where my goals were at, they were on my goal sheet before the season," Trimble told TheMorningSun.com. "But I've been blessed throughout my career by staying healthy."
This past weekend, former DeMatha standout Patrick Mealy carried the ball 18 times for 86 yards for Army, both of which were career highs. Mealy also caught one pass for 17 yards in a 34-10 loss to Georgia Tech. On the season, Mealy leads Army with 278 yards on 72 carries, but he has yet to reach the end zone. The three sat down with FightingIllini.com for a Q & A session. Here’s one of the questions:
Who's the bigger ladies' man?
Benn: Nate kinda is, but I'd say I'm the ladies' man. I'm undercover with mine, nobody knows about me.
