Javorn Farrell Signs NLI With UMass Basketball - 11/17/2008
11/17/2008 9:37:28 PM
Former Bishop Ireton Cardinal and current Riverdale Baptist senior Javorn Farrell officially signed on with UMass basketball:
Derek Kellogg announced today the signing of talented Javorn Farrell, a 6-5, 180-pound swingman out of Upper Marlboro, Md.
"We are excited to get a player and a person with the character of Javorn Farrell to join our program," said Kellogg. "Not only is he an unbelievable student and a great kid, he is going to be a great asset to our basketball program. I love his versatility as a player as he can play the four through the one position. He's a tough, physical hard-nosed player and will be physically ready to come in and help us right away. It is going to be a learning process for him like any young kid as he will have to learn how hard you have to play with the level of practice and the level of the games.
"I'm thrilled to have him coming to UMass. He comes here after playing for a great high school coach in Lou Wilson and a tremendous program at Riverdale Baptist. Javorn played for an outstanding nationally-renown AAU program, the DC Assault run by Curtis Malone. To get Javorn to sign early here with UMass and join our program is a great testament to the coaching staff and the University."

Good Counsel's Omoniurhie Signs NLI - 11/15/2008
11/15/2008 10:12:45 AM
DCSportsFan's Anthony Guy passed along the following news about Good Counsel senior basketball player Julius Omoniurhie:
Julius Omoniurhie decided last Wednesday to end his recruiting process early and verbally commit to the Mustangs of Southern Methodist University (Dallas, TX). The 6-foot-11 Omoniurhie held offers from other schools such as Texas Christian, Binghamton Univ. and South Florida, but something about the Texas school caught his attention.
“When I visited the school, I looked in on a couple of classes and liked the size and structure of the classes," Omoniurhie told Guy. "I also liked the weather. It's not too cold, and things just reminded me of Good Counsel. It just felt like home."
SMU Head Coach Matt Doherty had the following to say after Omoniurhie signed.
"Julius is a big post player that runs the floor well and plays with a toughness that I like," stated Doherty." "With Bamba [Fall] being a senior, we felt we needed to bring in a post man. We are excited that he will be a Mustang."
The Nigerian native is in his third year of basketball in the United States. Francis earned All-Conference Honorable Mention and the team's most improved player as a junior after helping his team to a 21-8 record with an 11-7 league mark. He was also named to the All-Tournament Team at the Merv Lopes Classic in Honolulu in December 2007. He finished his junior season averaging 5.4 rebounds and 4.6 points while hitting 46.2 percent from the floor.
"Over the past three years Julius's improvement has been dramatic," says Hibbs. "In his junior year he helped the team win 21 games, the most in 10 years. Julius has great enthusiasm and desire, and is a great young man. He can run the floor better than any big man I have seen in some time, and he continues to develop. He will be a great fit with SMU."

"I have offers from Stanford, Army, Monmouth, Towson and Bryant," he said. "Connecticut actually has been in touch and they want to recruit me as a wide receiver. That is fine with me, I'm looking for whatever gets me on the field. I've also heard Rutgers and West Virginia have inquired."
"When Connecticut told me I could play wide receiver that really intrigued me," he said. "They haven't offered yet, though. I'd say I don't have a specific favorite. If more offers come I'll have to look at everything closer."

Episcopal's Kalipinde Among LMU Signees - 11/14/2008
11/14/2008 3:07:03 PM
High school standouts Given Kalipinde and Edgar Garibay (Compton High School, Calif.) have signed National Letters of Intent to attend and play collegiate basketball for Loyola Marymount, Head Coach Bill Bayno announced on Friday. The pair completes the Lions commitments during the early signing period, joining Terrell Vinson (St. Frances Academy, Baltimore, Mary.) who signed on Wednesday.
"We are very excited with the three young men who will be joining our program," said Bayno. "All three are very athletic and have the potential to be great basketball players at LMU. With the young players we have heading into our current season, our two redshirts and with Terrell, Edgar and Given joining us next year, LMU basketball has the building blocks in place to do special things."
Kalipinde, a native of Zambia, Africa, came to Virginia in the fall of 2007 and made an instant impact. He became one of the IAC's best players as a junior on the court by averaging 19 points, 10 rebounds, four assists, 3.5 steals and two blocks for the Maroon. In a four-game winning streak that lifted the school to its best season in more than a decade, he averaged over 23 points. He was named Virginia All-State for his effort.
For Kalipinde, the formal commitment to LMU caps a whirlwind week the 6-3 guard will not soon forget. On Nov. 7 he scored two goals and had an assist to lead Episcopal boys' soccer to the Virginia State Championship. He was then named MVP of the state tournament and then a week later was named the Virginia State Co-Player of the Year. And he has done all of this being more than 8,000 miles from home.
"Given is an extremely gifted athlete who has really excelled despite only being in the United States for less than two years," said Bayno. "Given has been impressive in his ability to learn and gets better everyday. He will bring a lot to this program."
Kalipinde, who turned down scholarship offers by high NCAA Division I schools in soccer to play basketball, showed his athleticism in leading the Episcopal High School basketball team to the state playoffs in the winter of 2008 and then just a week ago leading the boys? soccer team to the state championship with a 4-0 win over Norfolk Academy. In less than eight months he was named to the Virginia All-State basketball team and was the Player of the Year in soccer.
