Games This Week
1. St. Albans (9-4)
With Buddy Burkhead on their side, how can St. Albans not be ranked No. 1? The Bulldogs have won six straight games and are undefeated in their past 23 conference games.
2. DeMatha (9-3)
The Stags are the only team in the WCAC without a conference loss, but DeMatha has two tough games this week against Good Counsel and Paul VI. Pitcher Nick Willoughby has only allowed one earned run in 14 innings pitched. Junior Kyle Riffe leads the team with 10 RBIs.
3. Ireton (7-2)
The Cardinals were No. 1 last week, but Ireton fell two spots after losing to both Gonzaga and DeMatha. Ireton plays St. Mary's Ryken and Liberty Christian Academy this week.
4. St. John's (7-3)
The Cadets aren't as star-studded as they were last season, but St. John's will be one of last teams standing in the WCAC. In addition to head coach Mark Gibbs and assistant coach Ed Gibbs, Kevin Gibbs has joined the staff this season.
5. Georgetown Prep (6-2)
If there is a team in the IAC that looks like they can beat St. Albans, it has to be Prep. The Hoyas are thriving under first-year Coach Chris Rodriguez.
6. Paul VI (5-5)
Sitting at .500 this late into the season is very uncharacteristic of PVI baseball, but we'll give them the benefit of the doubt for one more week. Paul VI, however, must prove they are legit contenders with Gonzaga and DeMatha on the schedule this week or fall to the middle of the pack.
7. Wilson (4-0)
We ranked Wilson at No. 20 last week because they hadn't played a game and we didn't know what to expect with first-year coach Eddie Smith. After four impressive victories over Gonzaga, Field School, Maret and Landon, it appears the Tigers are for real. Wilson will have to prove their worth, however, as the Tigers face School Without Walls, Sidwell Friends and St. Albans this week.
8. Gonzaga (5-5)
Although they lost to Wilson last week, Gonzaga had two nice victories over St. John's and Ireton. Sophomore Dillon Rudnicki looked very impressive against the Cadets.
9. Maret (6-3)
Although there are a few good teams in the MAC this season, it appears Maret is the team to beat. Pitcher Walter Albee tied a team record last week with 16 strikeouts in one game.
10. Good Counsel (6-4)
Good Counsel won both their games last week, defeating both St. Mary's Ryken and Paul VI. The Falcons also have one of the best team sites in the area.
11. St. Stephen's/St. Agnes (7-3)
Although the Saints fell to Flint Hill, St. Stephen's won both conference games last week against Episcopal and are tied with Prep and St. Albans at 2-0 in the IAC.
12. O'Connell (6-5)
The O'Connell Knights stay put at No. 12 after winning two of three games last week. Victories over Dominion and Wakefield were negated by a loss to Park View. O'Connell plays McNamara this week.
13. Flint Hill (5-3)
The Huskies move up two spots with victories over St. James and St. Stephen's. Flint Hill takes on Sidwell Friends and Potomac School this week.
14. Sidwell Friends (6-6)
Sidwell stays at No. 14, but the Quakers can move up with victories over Flint Hill, Maret and Wilson.
15. Potomac School (3-3)
Potomac School moved up two spots after nice wins over Maret and Episcopal. The Panthers could be a sleeper in the MAC.
16. Georgetown Day (2-1)
GDS moved to the top of the MAC with two victories over St. James, but Georgetown Day will be tested with Potomac School and Maret this week.
17. Landon (2-5)
The Bears continue to slide in the wrong direction after losing their fourth straight game. Landon will look to get back on track with two games against Bullis and one meeting with McNamara this week.
18. Episcopal (2-4)
Like Landon, Episcopal has lost four straight, but the Maroon hope to get back to their winning ways against a tough Prep team twice in the coming days.
19. Bullis (1-3)
Since a nice victory over Maret on Opening Day, Bullis has lost three straight games, including two to St. Albans. The Bulldogs play Landon twice this week.
20. McNamara (2-8)
McNamara picked up their second win of the season last week with a one-run victory over St. Mary's Ryken.
21. St. Andrew's (1-4)
St. Andrew's had a nice win over the Potomac School, but they have yet to win consecutive games. The Lions have the week off before returning to action against St. James.
22. St. Mary's Ryken (0-7)
The Knights are searching for their first win of the season. After a game with Ireton today, Ryken heads to Florida for their spring break trip.
23. St. James (0-7)
St. James has been outscored 101-31 through the first seven games of the season.
