The DC Lacrosse Association is proud to present the inaugural D.C. Lacrosse Classic on Saturday, May 16, at St. Albans School in Northwest, Washington, D.C.
The Lacrosse Classic includes games featuring all seven boys’ varsity lacrosse teams in the Nation’s Capital—St. Albans, Gonzaga, Sidwell Friends, St. John’s, Georgetown Day, Maret, and Archbishop Carroll—along with invited guest team Eleanor Roosevelt High School from Greenbelt, Maryland.
The DC Lacrosse Classic joins the Baseball Classic, Wrestling Classic, Softball Classic, and All-City Football Bowl in showcasing D.C. student-athletes and giving them an opportunity to play in a city-wide competition.
“We are excited that this event has turned into a reality,” said St. Albans varsity lacrosse coach Malcolm Lester, the founder of the DC Lacrosse Association. Lester is serving as a DC Lacrosse Classic director, along with Gonzaga head coach Casey O’Neill and Matt Breslin of Breakout Lacrosse. “It will be a great day for the hundreds of fans in attendance—including Mayor Fenty —and we hope to introduce many of the District’s youths to the wonderful sport of lacrosse.”
DC Lacrosse Classic sponsor Breakout Lacrosse will be conducting a free lacrosse clinic at noon for boys ages 6 to 14. The clinic is open to experienced lacrosse players and newcomers alike, no preregistration required. Also, equipment is not required and the DC Lacrosse Classic will provide sticks for those who need them. Washington, D.C.’s own Jesse Hubbard—a 1994 St. Albans graduate, three time All-American at Princeton, U.S. team member, all time leading scorer in Major League Lacrosse history, and Potomac Lacrosse Hall of Fame inductee—will headline the Breakout Lacrosse Clinic as the featured coach.
The lacrosse company Warrior/Brine has also donated new sticks to be presented to each team’s MVP at the conclusion of each game.
The DC Lacrosse Classic schedule is as follows:
- 10:30 am: Maret vs. Eleanor Roosevelt
- Noon: Breakout Lacrosse Clinic Featuring Warrior’s Jesse Hubbard
- 1:00 pm: Archbishop Carroll vs. Georgetown Day
- 3:30 pm: Sidwell Friends vs. St. John’s
- 6:00 pm: St. Albans vs. Gonzaga
Prior to the 6:00 p.m. game, Mayor Fenty will join the captains and referees at midfield for the pregame coin toss.
Admission to the DC Lacrosse Classic is free. Commemorative DC Lacrosse Classic tee-shirts, listing all eight participating schools, will be sold for $15, and game programs will also be available for purchase for $5. Concessions will also be sold throughout the day.

Proceeds from tee-shirt and program sales at the DC Lacrosse Classic will benefit The Washington Inner City Lacrosse Foundation (Winners Lacrosse) and the Bishop John T. Walker School. Winners Lacrosse is a nonprofit organization designed to provide youth from historically underserved neighborhoods in the greater Washington metropolitan area the opportunity to learn the game of lacrosse. The Bishop John T. Walker School, named after the late Bishop of Washington, is a tuition-free Episcopal School in Anacostia for children of low-income families.
“We’re thrilled to partner with Winners Lacrosse and the Bishop John T. Walker School, two noble entities that not only are both located here in the city, but also work toward improving the lives of young people,” said Gonzaga head coach and event director Casey O’Neill.
Winner's Lacrosse and Bishop Walker School has more information about these exemplary DC Lacrosse Classic beneficiaries.
The DC Lacrosse Classic asks that all fans and visitors to the DC Lacrosse Classic park in the Cathedral parking garage, and avoid parking on neighborhood streets. All fans, coaches and players should use the Garage’s main entrance on Wisconsin Ave., at the traffic light near Hearst Hall. Visitors should not use the Woodley Road entrance to the Garage. Traffic and towing for illegally parked cars is in effect. Thank you for your cooperation.
In the event of torrential downpours, the DC Lacrosse Classic will be held at Gonzaga College High School on its turf field. In the event of inclement weather, check www.dclacrosseclassic.com on the morning of May 16th for any announcements regarding change of venue.
The DC Lacrosse Classic directors have already begun planning for the 2010 event, and they say that the addition of Wilson High School as a District team with boys’ varsity lacrosse is not far off (Wilson currently has a girls’ varsity team). “I’ve had a number of conversations and meetings with the Wilson administration,” said Breakout’s Matt Breslin, “And I would not be surprised if they introduce boys’ lacrosse soon. If so, we would love to have them as our 8th DC team in the DC Lacrosse Classic. They are also eager to host the event, which would be great, and we will certainly give strong consideration to that before we make a final site decision for next year.”
