Best wcac football defense this coming season?
Tied with DeMatha 3-3 at half last season with that young defense. Beat SJC in the final regular season game with that young defense. Handled Good Counsel with that young defense. I'm banking on a year older and wiser this fall with Gonzaga's defense. Won 8 out of 10 games in the regular season with that young defense. Not bad for a bunch of sophomores and juniors. Gonzaga will compete as always but SJC and DeMatha will be the teams to beat in the end.
All good points but remember all the heavies in the league are pretty much in the same circle. It is going to be an interesting year in the WCAC for sure with Ryken taking a break from the competition. Carroll out on the recruit trail much more than has been seen in past few years. St. Johns celebrating what they believe is the class that will put them over the top. Good Counsel quietly doing what they do. Gonzaga returning a bumper group and DeMatha, well being DeMatha.
I agree with @pillsberrythrowboy, it is going to be a wait until they put on the pads to really definitively answer the question of who has the best.
In the words of T.O.: "Get your popcorn for 2017 it is going to be a show."
While I am inclined to agree w PR (it's Gonzaga or DeMatha as of now) it's really tough to say without knowing what rosters will look like in the fall. We know about Malvern's backup QB coming to SJC, but are they bringing in any new transfers along with him? What about the other WCAC programs? Just looking at rosters as they stood at the end of the season in 2016 (and taking out all graduating kids) it's likely Gonzaga or DeMatha, but again, this is a question best asked when we see the 2017 rosters in August/September.
Well the time has come to see who has the better defense in the WCAC when Gonzaga plays DeMatha this Friday night. Gonzaga has shut out three teams so far this season (Gilman, Prep and McNamara) and would have shut out Avalon but they pulled the starters in the second half with the score 40-0 at half. Gonzaga will have their hands full to say the least this weekend against DeMatha and both defenses will be put to the test. It should be a great game. Don't know much about SJC's defense except they have played a brutal schedule and they are competing well at a national level. That's a little scary for other teams in the WCAC. They play GC this weekend so that will be an interesting one as well. Let the fun begin!
